How to Child-Proof Your Kitchen Cabinets

Safety is your top priority when you have children in the house. Whether you’re expecting your first child or already have a few to look after, the first thing you should do is child-proof your kitchen cabinets, stairways, and doors. 

While there’s no doubt that the little ones will always find a way to get into trouble, as a parent, you want to make your home as safe as possible. Below, we have outlined a few ways to child-proof your kitchen cabinets and keep the little ones out of danger. 

1. Magnetic Locks 

There are plenty of adhesive hardware options in the market that can save you the effort of drilling. You can select an adhesive magnetic lock for your kitchen cabinets to child-proof them. This option would take just a few minutes to set but offer plenty of safety. 

For starters, the magnetic locks stick to the inside of your kitchen cabinets and will only open when someone holds a tiny magnetic key in front of the latch. Since you will have that key, there’s no way your child will be able to open the safety magnetic hardware sticks. 

2. Latch Locks 

Latch locks are a popular choice, which you can attach to the top of your cabinets or drawers. You will have to attach a piece of special plastic above the cabinet or drawers, and the hook locks will attach securely. 

Once the latches catch on, there’s no way the drawers or cabinets will open, especially by a little child. 

3. Cabinet Cords or Rubber Bands

If you do not believe your child is fidgety enough to tamper with the kitchen cabinets but still want to be careful, you can opt for rubber bands. Even cabinet cords perform the task well, which is relatively a cost-free option. 

Tie the rubber bands or cords around the adjoining cabinet handles tightly enough so that only adults can open them. You may also opt for safer options like industrially-manufactured cabinet cords. The latter wrap around the handles of the cabinets and zip-up tight. 

4. Safety Locks- Adjustable 

If you want a less complex child-proof system for kitchen cabinets, you can settle for safety locks. This single-lock is a more comprehensive solution for multiple cabinets at a time. In this option, you will receive two plastic anchors to place around both sides of the cabinet, 

You will also receive a plastic strip in the bundle to place in the middle. Then all you have to do is attach the safety lock from one end of the counter to the other end, from the front of the cabinets. In the end, pull the straps tight enough to keep the cabinets closed. 

5. Remove Harmful Objects 

If you don’t want any other locking system for kitchen cabinets yet want to child-proof them, ensure there are no harmful objects inside. Even additional child-proof locks can often fail, especially if a child likes fidgeting with them. 

In these cases, you could remove dangerous objects away from the cabinets within their reach, such as:

• Cleaning supplies 
• Medications 
• Lighters, knives, tools, and other sharp objects 
• Cutlery 
• Plastic bags
